Check Your Wall Against This List

  1. Leaning. The wall tilts forward at the top. Even a slight lean that was not there last year means the soil behind it is winning. This is the number-one sign.
  2. Bulging. The face bows outward in the middle. Water pressure is building behind that spot — the drainage there has failed.
  3. Stepped cracking. Cracks that stair-step through mortar joints in block or stone walls. The wall is moving in sections.
  4. Soil washing out at the base. Fines escaping from behind or under the wall mean voids are forming. Voids mean settlement is coming.
  5. Water stains and efflorescence. Dark streaks or white crusty deposits on the face mean water is moving through the wall instead of around it.
  6. Timber bowing or rotting. Timbers bowing between posts, or soft spots you can push a screwdriver into, mean the wood is giving up.
  7. Sinkholes or settlement behind the wall. Dips in the ground above the wall mean backfill is washing out or was never compacted.

Which Signs Are Urgent

Call this week: sudden new leaning after a storm, bulging that is visibly growing, soil actively washing out, or any wall above four feet showing movement. Tall walls carry real force — a failed tall wall can damage whatever is below it. Watch and plan: minor efflorescence, small mortar cracks that have not changed in a year, aging timber that is still straight. These deserve attention but not panic.

What Not to Do

Do not pile more soil against a leaning wall to "support" it — you are adding the exact load that is killing it. Do not ignore it through another rainy season; Fairfax County's spring storms are when marginal walls become failed walls. And do not let anyone sell you a cosmetic fix — repointing the cracks on a moving wall is paint on a sinking ship.

Frequently Asked Questions

My wall leans a little. Is that normal?

No — walls should stay plumb. A lean that is new or growing means the wall is moving, and movement does not reverse on its own. Get it looked at.

How fast can a failing wall collapse?

Most walls fail slowly over seasons, then quickly in one storm. A wall that has been leaning for a year can come down in a single heavy rain. Do not gamble through spring storm season.

Is a leaning wall dangerous?

It can be — especially taller walls, or walls above a patio, driveway, or play area. The soil and stone a wall holds back weigh tons. Take movement seriously.

Can you inspect my wall without selling me something?

Yes. We inspect, explain what we see, and give you options in writing — including "watch it for now" when that is the honest answer.
